As the Chief Mental Health Expert of Camp Aftermath, I recently had the privilege of facilitating a retreat in Berlin for Mission Ukraine, supporting a group of remarkable women serving on the frontlines of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Initially, I approached this experience with some apprehension. I anticipated that participants coming from an active warzone might seek to process specific war memories or focus on their harrowing experiences. However, what unfolded over those four days was profoundly different—and deeply inspiring.

What these women truly needed was not a space to relive the trauma of war, but a sanctuary to focus on themselves. For many, this meant rediscovering their own emotional and human needs, reconnecting with others who share similar experiences, and building the trust necessary to come away from the isolation that often accompanies high-stakes caregiving.

These strong, resilient women—doctors, paramedics, and first responders managing and treating the casualties of war—embraced vulnerability as a pathway to healing. They allowed themselves to step back, momentarily shedding the overwhelming demands of their roles, and took the risk of focusing on their inner needs. Vulnerability is often perceived as weakness, but in this space, it became their strength.

Over the course of the retreat, I witnessed profound transformation. Through tailored therapeutic activities such as mindfulness exercises, somatic restoration, and boundary-setting workshops, these women began to recharge emotionally and physically. By the final day, the sense of connection within the group was palpable. They supported one another not only as colleagues but as human beings united by shared purpose and experience.

It was humbling to see the positive changes that emerged in just four days. The willingness to embrace vulnerability, to trust one another, and to reconnect with themselves became the foundation for their renewal. These women returned to Ukraine not only as caregivers but as individuals better equipped to navigate the challenges ahead with strength and compassion.

As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded that even in the most difficult circumstances, the power of connection and self-care can transform lives. I am deeply honored to have been part of this journey and to have witnessed the resilience of these incredible women.

To those who serve others selflessly: never underestimate the importance of taking time for yourself. It is not an indulgence—it is a necessity that enables you to continue giving your best to those who depend on you.

Let us continue to create spaces where vulnerability is celebrated and healing is possible. Together, we can make a lasting impact, even in the face of adversity.
