After nearly a decade as our Chief Mental Health Advisor, Dr. John Whelan is stepping into a national role with the True Patriot Love Foundation. We send him forward with profound gratitude.

Today we share a moment of both pride and deep gratitude.

Dr. John Whelan, our Chief Mental Health Advisor and the very first mental health professional to believe in Camp Aftermath, is moving on to lead the oversight committee at the True Patriot Love Foundation, one of the largest organizations in Canada serving Veterans and serving members. It is a prestigious role, and a fitting one, and it means his impact will now reach even further across the community he has given his life to.

The man who believed first

Nearly ten years ago, when Camp Aftermath was little more than an idea, Dr. Whelan was the one who stood beside it. He gave our program its structure, its clinical integrity, and its credibility. He helped shape a model that is peer-supported and Veteran-led, yet always clinically guided, and he held us to a standard of care that has carried our participants safely and well, with a 98 percent completion rate and zero critical adverse events across our cohorts.

A Navy Veteran himself, Dr. Whelan has devoted more than thirty years to this country and to the wellbeing of those who served. His fingerprints are on everything we do.

From La Carpio to Berlin

From the very beginning, Dr. Whelan showed up wherever the work led. In the early days, he was in the ghettos of La Carpio in Costa Rica, rolling up his sleeves alongside our participants on volunteer projects. Years later, he travelled to Germany to support Ukrainian first responders during active war. Always steadfast, always devoted to the task, always present for our members.

Berlin Retreat

Roto1. Costa Rica Retreat

“Dr. Whelan didn’t just lend us his expertise. He believed in us before anyone else did, and he never wavered, not in a shantytown in Costa Rica, not in a room full of Ukrainian first responders in Berlin, not once in ten years. Everything we are, he helped build.” — Farid Yaghini, CEO and Founder

Our care continues, stronger for his presence

We know a question naturally follows news like this: what happens to the clinical heart of the program?

The answer is that it stands strong. Our Mental Health Professional Advisory Committee was shaped by Dr. Whelan’s training and presence, and it remains steadfast. Our clinical team carries his standard forward, and in the coming weeks we will appoint a new Chief Mental Health Professional to continue leading our clinical practice. The rigour and the care that Dr. Whelan built into Camp Aftermath do not leave with him. They stay, because he made sure of it.

With our whole heart

On behalf of our Board of Directors, our volunteers, our clinical team, and most of all our participants, thank you, Dr. Whelan. Thank you for your devotion, your wisdom, and your belief in us. We could not be prouder to watch you step into a role where you will help even more of those who served.

Fair winds and following seas. We are with you, and we are grateful.
