From December 13 to 20, 2024, Camp Aftermath (CA) proudly collaborated with Mission Ukraine (MU) in Berlin, Germany, for a life-changing retreat. This partnership brought together two organizations committed to supporting first responders amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. Backed by funding from Germany’s EKFS foundation (Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung) and with the valuable assistance of the Be an Angel, the retreat centered on Camp Aftermath’s proven three-phased program, providing much-needed tools for rejuvenation and resilience.
As Camp Aftermath’s CEO, I, Farid Yaghini, alongside our chief mental health expert, Dr. Whelan, led workshops and supported MU staff during the Phase 2 implementation of their program. It was an extraordinary honor to witness the strength and resolve of these courageous women—Ukrainian first responders serving tirelessly on the frontlines.
Caregiving often comes with a heavy emotional toll, and this retreat was designed to create a safe space where participants could process their experiences, combat burnout, and reconnect with their purpose. Drawing from the success of Camp Aftermath’s women-only Roto 7 program, our Berlin initiative incorporated mindfulness, yoga, emotional regulation, and boundary-setting exercises. By focusing on the “here and now,” we provided tools for healing in a supportive group setting.
The retreat underscored the universal nature of trauma—and the shared pathways to recovery. Participants left feeling recharged and recommitted to their critical roles, equipped with tools to sustain their well-being. It was an inspiring reminder that healing transcends borders.
I am deeply grateful to our volunteers, Board of Directors, and the Mission Ukraine team, whose dedication made this milestone possible. As an Iranian refugee turned Canadian soldier and now CEO, standing in Berlin to support Ukrainian first responders was a deeply personal moment—a full-circle reflection of my journey.
To the brave first responders of Ukraine: you are an inspiration. This retreat strengthened my resolve to continue Camp Aftermath’s mission of holistic healing. Together, we’ll keep striving for peace and resilience.
